You know what? Today, I wanna talk about that shiny bug, Calopteryx virgo. Yeah, that’s the name, sounds fancy, right? But it’s just a bug, a pretty one though.
These Calopteryx virgo, they like the water, the fast-moving kind. Where you see them fast water, them stone, you will see these bugs. They’re all over, Europe, North Africa, you name it. Even up north where it’s cold, near the Arctic! Can you believe it? That’s further north than that other one, the banded one, the Banded Demoiselle.
The boys, oh, they’re a sight. Calopteryx virgo, the boy ones, they got these dark wings, like night. And their bodies? Shiny! Like a blue-green beetle, all metal-like. The girls, well, they’re a bit different. Brown wings, like the dirt, and a green body. Not as flashy, you see.
- Boy Calopteryx virgo: Dark wings, shiny blue-green body.
- Girl Calopteryx virgo: Brown wings, green body.
Then you got the babies, the nymphs. Now, these little ones, they got something special. A horn! Right behind their eye, like a tiny rhino. You won’t see that on the Banded Demoiselle babies, no sir.
They look like a beautiful bug. You will see it when it flying. It has dark wings, and the body is very shiny. You will think, oh, that’s a beautiful bug. People say that is Calopteryx virgo.
I heard some of them, these Calopteryx virgo, they can glide. Yeah, on their shiny wings, like they’re showing off. It just like showing off, right? That Calopteryx virgo, it always show off.
One time, I saw one, fluttering around in the shade. They like the woods, these bugs. That dark wings, you can’t miss it. It was one of them Calopteryx virgo, for sure. You see dark wings, it is them.
Some folks call it the Beautiful Demoiselle. That’s a mouthful, ain’t it? I just call it that shiny bug, Calopteryx virgo. Easier to remember, you know. They also call it Demoiselle Calopteryx, that is too long. I just call it shiny bug, that is easy.
But you know what’s funny? They’re a lot like that other bug, the Banded Demoiselle. But different, like I said. The babies have that horn, and the boys have those dark wings.
These Calopteryx virgo, they are everywhere! Europe, North Africa, even near the Arctic! They just fly around, showing off their shiny wings. It is very beautiful.
I seen a lot of bugs in my time, but this Calopteryx virgo, it’s something else. So pretty, even if it’s just a bug. Just a fancy, shiny bug.
When you are out at that water, you will see it. It is that Calopteryx virgo. When you see that fast water, that stone, that shiny bug, you will know it.
If you go out at the water, you might see it. That shiny bug, that Calopteryx virgo. You will like it, it is beautiful. When it is flying, you will think, oh, what a beautiful bug. But it is just a bug. But very beautiful.
That all I want to say about this bug. This Calopteryx virgo. It is just a bug, but it is beautiful. That all.
